Liverpool will not still sign a new midfielder this summer amid rumours of interest in Lamine Camara following the 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on the opening day of the Premier League season. James Pearce reports for the Athletic that the decision not to sign a new midfielder is set in stone and Liverpool will not bring a player in to bolster their ranks. He wrote: “Despite the clamour for midfield reinforcements, which intensified after Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Newcastle, senior club sources say Liverpool’s focus remains on bolstering their attacking options out wide. “They don’t intend to replace Jones, as they see teenager Trey Nyoni as ready to step up and play a bigger part this season. “Unless there’s a change of stance, it’s only the forward line which will be strengthened.” There have been widespread reports over the last 24 hours, linking Liverpool with AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara, who impressed last season and during a cameo at Anfield in pre-season. French journalist Abdel Hamed reports that Liverpool “are still on the hunt for a No.6” and have identified Camara as a player that could fill this need. For all their ability on the ball in attack, neither Ryan Gravenberch nor Dominik Szoboszlai appear capable of performing in a double pivot and were repeatedly found guilty of leaving too much space for the Magpies to counter-attack through. While Andoni Iraola will need to find solutions if nothing changes, it reeks of poor planning to consider that Liverpool might not sign a new midfielder, which is compounded by the decision to let Curtis Jones leave for Inter Milan. The Scouser wanted to leave, and Liverpool honoured that desire (which I’m onboard with), but not replacing him will be a decision that comes back to haunt them.
