West Ham have announced that former women’s team captain Dagný Brynjarsdóttir has been named an official Club Ambassador. The former Iceland international returns to the Hammers in an ambassadorial capacity having brought the curtain down on a memorable four-year spell in Claret and Blue in August 2025. A lifelong West Ham United supporter, Brynjarsdóttir made 87 appearances in all competitions after arriving in east London in January 2021, scoring 18 goals and becoming an immensely popular figure with teammates and supporters alike. Named captain ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, the midfielder went on to lead the Hammers with distinction, while her contribution both on and off the pitch was recognised when she was named women’s Hammer of the Year at the conclusion of that season. Now based in her native Iceland with her family, Brynjarsdóttir will maintain her close connection with West Ham United through her new role, supporting the women’s team and wider programme both virtually and during regular visits to the UK. A key focus of her role will be supporting the development of the next generation of Hammers through the club’s women’s U21 Academy, sharing the experience and knowledge gained throughout a distinguished playing career at the highest level. Fittingly, Brynjarsdóttir’s first act as a Club Ambassador saw her return to Chadwell Heath Training Ground to work with the Women’s U21s group. The former captain watched the young Hammers being put through their paces, before spending time with the group, offering words of encouragement and sharing advice from her own experiences in professional football. Brynjarsdóttir said: “I’m really pleased to be back involved with West Ham United and to continue my relationship with a club that means so much to me and my family. “I have so many special memories from my time here as a player and captain, and I’m really excited to now have the opportunity to give something back to the club in a different way. “I’ve experienced so much throughout my career, both on and off the pitch, and I hope I can use some of those experiences to support and inspire the next generation of players coming through at West Ham.” Head of Women’s Football, Philippa Cartwright, said: “Dagný made a huge impact during her four years with us, both as a player and captain, and it’s fantastic that she will now continue to be involved with the Club in this new capacity. “She is an inspirational figure and a fantastic role model for young players, not only because of everything she achieved on the pitch, but also because of the way she conducted herself and represented West Ham throughout her time here. “Dagný is a committed professional; we supported her extraordinary drive to get back to competing after the birth of her second child, and her family will always be part of our West Ham family.
