Ja’Marr Chase gave the Cincinnati Bengals a scare when he landed awkwardly trying to catch a deep ball down the right sideline in practice Tuesday, Aug. 25. The Bengals star receiver was slow to get up after the pass fell incomplete, and when he did, he was limping and quickly went back to the ground as trainer Matt Summers approached. After a moment, he was up and walking gingerly alongside Summers off to the side of the playing field, but soon joined his teammates to watch the rest of practice. Chase said after practice that he is fine and could have continued if needed. “Just a football play, missed my footing and just a little tweak, but I'm fine,” Chase said. DJ Turner was one of the two defensive backs defending the play and the first person to approach Chase to check on him, as soon as he saw Chase was not immediately getting up. Usually there is some chirping between Chase and Turner on plays like that, but Turner wasn’t going to gloat this time. Chase is one of the key players the Bengals cannot afford to lose. “That was scary,” Turner said. “But I mean, he's good though. Checked up on him, and yeah, like, yeah, he's good. That's the main thing. I don't care about the play. Nothing else. Just checking up on him.” The two players seemed to collide mid-air, and Chase twisted his hips trying to make a play, which impacted his landing. Chase said he prayed to God that he would be alright when he was on the ground, but he knew relatively quickly that it wasn’t anything serious. He called it a “little hyperextension” of his knee and could be seen flexing his left leg and stretching his quadriceps. “Once I was able to start walking (I knew),” Chase said. “I don't know what exactly went down or how I did it. I'm going to be honest, I really don't know. It was like an incident of me missing the ground or missing my footing or something like that.” Tee Higgins immediately took off his pads at that point, and that ended his day, though he told reporters later it was just a “vet day.” Chase said he was trying to go back in, but was told to just watch the rest of practice. Former Canadian Football League standout Dohnte Meyer, who has impressed this preseason, ended up getting the first-team reps in Chase’s place and had another good day. Turner said his speed and athleticism make him stand out, and he enjoyed battling with him some Tuesday, but he was just relieved Chase was OK. “That's huge,” Turner said. “That was the main focus, and the next period I went over there to make sure he was good, and he said he was good, so we all good. We can breathe. Everybody can breathe.” Chase said he doesn’t know if he will practice Wednesday or take it easy. “That's the upstairs thing,” Chase said. “I don't really know about that yet.” Owner and president Mike Brown was seen talking to Summers after Chase rejoined his teammates along the side of the field. Chase said he could play a game Wednesday if needed. He worked hard in the offseason to prepare his body and try to stay healthy, but he’s not concerned about one injury scare keeping him out. “It's just freak accidents,” Chase said. “Stuff like this happens all the time. It's football. Some things are out of my control, and that was one situation that I couldn't control, but I can control now.” “I'm just happy I could walk still. That's the biggest blessing because I know what it feels like to not walk. So I'm just happy I can still walk.”
