Bill Belichick is considered one of the best head coaches in the history of the NFL. He won a record six Super Bowl titles with the New England Patriots and created one of the most dominant and successful dynasties in the sport.
He is currently the head coach of the college football program North Carolina Heel Tars. Unlike his NFL career, his college career has not gone well, with one analyst pulling no punches about his tenure in North Carolina.
Analyst rants into Bill Belichick and predicts disastrous college career
Paul Finebaum delivered a scathing criticism of Belichick’s tenure so far at North Carolina during an appearance on ESPN’s First Take on August 25, 2026. The longtime college football analyst brutally stated, “I’m not pulling for Bill Belichick. He’s a grouch. He’s a bully, and his career in college is about to go down in flames.”
He further pointed out how he is facing problems with his staff, “He lost Michael Lombardi, his chief assistant and GM. His son disappeared from the staff a couple weeks ago as the defensive coordinator; it is mass chaos in Chapel Hill. I don’t believe they’ll win this game in Ireland, and I don’t think Bill Belichick is going to survive until the end of the season.”
Finebaum concluded with, “And the idea that somebody who has easily wrapped up the title as the greatest NFL coach of all-time with his six championships in the Super Bowl…is going to go down in flames, but he did it to himself.”
Belichick’s first season in charge of the Tar Heels ended badly in 2025, as they finished the season with a poor 4-8 record. The head coach has also been engulfed in controversy, with his huge age gap relationship with Jordon Hudson. He was also snubbed for being inducted into the HOF in 2026 as well. Finebaum also called into question Belichick’s NFL credentials and his spiraling college career.
Analyst puts Bill Belichick in “worst college football coaches” category
Finebaum did not stop with criticizing Belichick’s recent performances. He also questioned his role in building the Patriots’ successful dynasty, stating that the biggest reason was Tom Brady. He said, “He couldn’t accept that nobody in the NFL wanted him anymore. And because he is Bill Belichick and he knows more than anybody, even though we all now know it was Tom Brady who led him to all those Super Bowl championships, Brady proved that the second he got out of there.”
He further criticized Belichick and called him one of the worst coaches in college football history, “Bill Belichick had to find a university that would offer him a job, and he would show the world that he is the greatest coach of all-time. Instead, he’s proven to be a disaster. He’s one of the worst college football coaches in a short period of time I have ever seen.”
Bill Belichick is certainly facing a lot of pressure and criticism, and it remains to be seen how his next season in charge of North Carolina fares.
