Virves won the WRC2 class at Rally Finland, strengthening his position in the title race. The Estonian certainly benefited from Roope Korhonen’s retirement and the 30-second time penalty handed to Teemu Suninen on the final day, but he nevertheless produced another highly impressive performance on the fast gravel roads of Central Finland. “The season has started exactly as well as it looks. We’ve been really strong. Maybe we didn’t expect such a good start, but we’ve worked very hard for it. It’s great to see that all the hard work is paying off,” Virves said. He expected a particularly tough battle with the Finnish drivers. “After Estonia, I already expected the competition here to be really intense, and that’s exactly how it turned out. Of course, several drivers suffered misfortune during the rally, and that shaped the final result.” Rally Finland also featured an unusually high number of crashes in the top category. Virves believes the event was exceptionally demanding. “I think there were more crashes than usual. It wasn’t an easy rally. The roads were extremely demanding, and that was reflected in the number of incidents.” The victory has moved Virves to within touching distance of the WRC2 title, but he remained calm when discussing the championship battle. “Winning the championship has been our goal since the very beginning of the season. That’s what we’ve been working towards, and now we just need to keep doing the same.”
