Liverpool icon Luis Suarez convinced Ronald Araujo to stay at Barcelona after career advice Liverpool is closing in on a deal to sign Ronald Araujo from Barcelona this summer, with former star Luis Suarez previously giving some valuable advice to the defender. Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez once gave some valuable advice to Ronald Araujo, which may have eventually led to his loan switch to Anfield. It comes as the Reds are closing in on a loan deal for the Barcelona defender, with reports stating that the move will include a permanent buy option clause that can be triggered next summer. It's a move that has come out of the blue to help fix some key issues for Andoni Iraola, as the defensive depth remains a major problem heading into the new season. Araujo, 27, covers off positions both at centre-back and right-back, two areas that have been struck by injuries throughout last season and into preseason this time around. His arrival comes at a time when Barcelona is looking to move in a new direction, while there may be an opportunity for him to impress at Liverpool and make it his next club. With that, Araujo brings experience and leadership, along with his versatility, although there will be some concerns over his injury history and his ability to come up with a moment of calamity. He wouldn't be where he is without those experiences at Barcelona, however, with former Liverpool star Luis Suarez playing a huge role in getting him to the top. The pair are international teammates for Uruguay, and back in 2022, journalist Gerard Romero reported that Suarez helped convince Araujo to stay at the Nou Camp and renew his contract instead of moving to the Premier League. The striker also had some valuable advice last year for the defender, when he told Sport: "Sometimes, when I talk to Ronald Araujo, I tell him. When he scores goals or when he wins something, I tell him, remember, people have no memory and every three days they are going to demand the same from you, and that’s what happens to him; he has to perform every game between an eight and a ten because if not the people will already ask him. "It’s what Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético demand of you. Be at a high level and constantly.” On coping with the pressure, Suarez added: "It depends on him. Criticism is the order of the day, it is constant. What I said at the beginning, that criticism sells more than praise. Praise is sometimes nice, but people buy criticism more.” It's advice that could prove useful ahead of his move to Liverpool, where there is a fresh start for him to show exactly what he is capable of. At 27, he will be one of the more experienced stars in the backline and someone that the team may lean upon for his ability at the top level for both club and country. It remains to be seen whether he could do that, but Suarez's advice could help make him a success at Anfield.
