Romelle Donovan’s first goal for Sheffield United secured a 2-1 win over Blackburn and progress to the Carabao Cup third round for the first time in five years. The Blades dominated the first half and went ahead through Tom Cannon’s composed 20th-minute finish. Dapo Afolayan spectacularly levelled after the break but 19-year-old Donovan, on loan from Brentford, reacted quickest to tap in after Tyrese Campbell hit a post. Dion De Neve stung the palms of Adam Davies early on but Donovan showed early glimpses of his menace by forcing Aynsley Pears into a flying 13th-minute save. Cannon fired Sheffield United ahead when he latched onto Campbell’s through ball and coolly lofted over Pears, and almost doubled his tally on the stroke of half-time but his snapshot cannoned off the post. Tony Mowbray’s half-time message clearly worked as they equalised in the 55th minute when Dapo cut in from the left and curled an unstoppable shot into the top right corner. But the Blades had the last laugh nine minutes from the end when Callum O’Hare surged into the area, squaring for Campbell and although he struck the woodwork, Donovan latched onto the ball to slot home the winner.
