Daniel Johnson is the newest owner of a Saskatchewan Roughriders record — longest reception by an offensive lineman. Lining up as an eligible receiver, the Roughriders’ No. 65 collaborated with quarterback Trevor Harris for a 17-yard gain against the host B.C. Lions on Sunday. The previous mark was set against the visitors from Edmonton on Oct. 23, 2010, when Darian Durant found hulking Marc Parenteau for 13 yards and a first down. Third on the list is Dan Clark, who hauled in a 12-yarder from Drew Willy versus Edmonton on Nov. 2, 2013 at historic Mosaic Stadium. Fourth? That would be Johnson’s current offensive line cohort, Jermarcus Hardrick. Brett Smith collaborated with Yoshi on a 10-yard gain to set up a touchdown against the host Montreal Alouettes on Nov. 8, 2015. Three current members of the Roughriders’ offensive line — Johnson, Hardrick and Logan Ferland — all have one career CFL reception. Ferland was credited one catch for a four-yard gain against the visiting Ottawa REDBLACKS on Aug. 21, 2021. Playing in his third CFL game, Ferland snared a Cody Fajardo pass after it was deflected by Ottawa offensive lineman Avery Ellis. Johnson, Hardrick and Ferland were all signed by Vice-President of Football Operations and General Manager Jeremy O’Day, who has one of the Roughriders’ five TD receptions by an offensive lineman. Clark leads the way with two TD receptions (in 2013 and 2014). O’Day (1999), Rob Lazeo (2006) and Parenteau (2010 Grey Cup) are tied with one. O’Day’s seven-yard TD reception (from Steve Sarkisian at B.C. on Nov. 5, 1999) is the sixth-longest catch by a Roughriders offensive lineman. Fifth on the list is Clark, who caught an eight-yard TD pass from Durant against the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats on July 21, 2013. Career-wise, O’Day has matched Johnson’s 17-yarder. O’Day registered a 17-yarder with the Toronto Argonauts in 1998. As a rookie in 1997, O’Day caught two passes for 21 yards, with a long gain of 16. Most noteworthy, though, was a five-yard touchdown on a pass from CFL legend Doug Flutie. Most recently, Johnson registered the 18th reception by an offensive lineman in Roughriders history. The first was by Reg Whitehouse — for no gain against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sept. 7, 1953 at Taylor Field. The completion, thrown by Frank Tripucka, resulted in no gain. One other note about Johnson: Sunday’s catch put him in a tie for the seventh-longest by an offensive lineman or defensive player in Roughriders history: #1: Tom Burgess threw a 39-yard TD pass to defensive end Bobby Jurasin on July 19, 1989 in B.C. #2: Mike Lazecki found defensive back Jeff Treftlin for 36 yards on a fake punt against the visiting Calgary Stampeders on Sept. 29, 1991. #3: On another fake punt, Bob Macoritti spotted linebacker Lou Clare for a first down in Calgary on Aug. 20, 1976. #4 (tie): Jim Marshall, who would become a legendary defensive lineman with the Minnesota Vikings, collaborated with quarterback Bob Brodhead for 24 yards against B.C. on Sept. 7, 1959 at Taylor Field. (On Aug. 29 of that year, Brodhead hit Marshall for an eight-yard touchdown pass against the visiting Blue Bombers. Winnipeg’s Head Coach at the time, Bud Grant, went on to coach Marshall in Minnesota.) #4 (tie): Burgess to Jurasin for 24 yards at Calgary on Oct. 30, 1988. #6: Glenn Dobbs connected with defensive end Gordon Sturtridge for a 20-yarder at Winnipeg on Sept. 4, 1953. (Sturtridge was among four Roughriders players who lost their lives on a Dec. 9, 1956 plane crash. His number — 73 — is retired by the team.) #7 (tie): With Lazecki in and a punt expected, the Roughriders instead called for a direct snap to third-string quarterback Tony Rice, who rolled out and completed a pass to defensive halfback John Hoffman for 17 yards and a first down against the visiting B.C. side on Nov. 3, 1990. #7 (tie): Harris to Johnson for 17 yards … and a record! The latter reception expanded the Roughriders’ 2026 Johnson count to four. Four different players with that surname — Daniel, Jalen, Johnny and KeeSean Johnson — have caught at least one pass this season. Before Sunday, “Johnson” already led the All-Time surname scroll with three different recipients. There are 11 examples of two players with the same last name registering at least one catch in a season: 1961: Ray Smith (13 receptions), Earl Smith (1). 1977: Fred Williams (1), Paul Williams (1). 1982: Dwight Edwards (38), Jimmy Edwards (3). 1983: Ron Robinson (44), Frank Robinson (1). 1984: Stanley Washington (20), Michael Washington (14). 1987: Todd Brown (30), Albert Brown (1). 2001: Roell Preston (22), Rock Preston (12). 2014: Taj Smith (29), Ryan Smith (13). 2015: Ryan Smith (59), Taj Smith (8). (ASIDE: The 2015 Roughriders produced four Smith-to-Smith TD passes, thrown by Brett Smith and caught by Ryan Smith. MILESTONE ALERT: The next catch by a Johnson will be the 100th this season by a Roughrider who possesses that surname. Who knows? No. 100 might even be caught by Daniel!
