Newcastle United have had a positive few days. They managed to get a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at the weekend and were unlucky not to win. That exceeded expectations after how poor the Magpies were in pre-season. Of course, all of that is positive. At the same time though, it does not mean that Newcastle United can sit back and not strengthen their squad in the remainder of the summer transfer window. There are still quite a few gaps all across the pitch. The midfield one looks close to being filled with the impending arrival of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City, as everything is believed to have been agreed. They need to add to their options up front as well. One issue the club have faced is struggling to convince players to head to St James’ Park. But it looks like one of their forward targets is willing to make that move. That is good news for Newcastle United. However, there are a number of clubs in a similar position, and he will have plenty of options if Lille agree a transfer price. So, this has to be seen as a boost for Newcastle United and their chances of signing Fernandez-Pardo. But this is no way a sign that a move will happen or is even close. At the same time, Sacha Tavolieri had reported earlier in the day that Newcastle United were preparing a €60 million offer for Fernandez-Pardo. So, there is a serious level of interest in signing the Belgian international for sure. Can Newcastle sign Fernandez-Pardo? Fernandez-Pardo is a man in demand, there is no doubt about that. And he is also believed to be keen on leaving this summer. When these factors combine, a move becomes likely. The Belgian’s next destination remains up in the air though. If Newcastle United can bring him to St James’ Park, it would have to be viewed as a major coup. Fernandez-Pardo is someone who has the ability to play both as a centre-forward and on the wing. Both are positions where the Magpies could do with more options. He did score just 8 goals last season though. So, if the club are looking for a consistent goalscorer, Fernandez-Pardo might not be the right choice.
