Manchester United could sell centre-back Lisandro Martinez next summer, according to talkSPORT.
The 28-year-old has one year remaining on his current contract, but United are ready to trigger an option to extend his deal for a further year to avoid losing him for free.
However, the Red Devils could let him leave next summer if he fails to prove his fitness this season.
Martinez has largely been consistent since joining United from Ajax in 2022, but has missed 108 games for club and country through injury since then.
United need a fit Martinez this season
Martinez was an unused substitute in the defeat to Hull City after arriving late for pre-season following his involvement with Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Heaven partnered Harry Maguire in central defence, having been the second left-footed centre-back named in the matchday squad.
Heaven struggled, highlighting the need for Martinez to remain fit if United are to improve defensively.
The Argentina international appeared to have rediscovered his best form at the World Cup after being named in FIFA’s Dream XI for the tournament.
Martinez’s composure on the ball and progressive passing could help United build more effectively from the back and launch direct attacks from defence.
His aggression, anticipation and tackling could also help the Red Devils become more solid defensively.
Manager Michael Carrick needs an injury-free and in-form Martinez to achieve his goals this season.
Martinez, described as ‘brilliant‘ by Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, also needs to stay fit if he is to extend his stay at United beyond next summer, making this a make-or-break season for him.
The former Ajax star could start when Man United host Ipswich Town in their first league home game of the season next Sunday.
