Liverpool’s pursuit of PSG forward Bradley Barcola continues to dominate the transfer headlines, with reports ranging from valuation disagreements to ongoing negotiations and alternative targets being considered by both clubs. However, one theory that has gained traction online suggests that there may be more going on behind the scenes. The theory is predicated on the idea that Liverpool and PSG have already reached an agreement for Barcola’s transfer, but that the announcement is being deliberately delayed to aid PSG’s other transfer concerns. The reasoning is relatively straightforward PSG are still active in the transfer market and remain interested in strengthening several positions. If the European champions were to publicly announce the sale of Barcola for a fee believed to be around €120m (£102.9m) before completing the rest of their business, the clubs they are negotiating with for other targets would immediately know they have more significant funds available to spend. The consequences are obvious. Selling clubs may increase their asking prices, while negotiations for players reportedly admired by PSG, such as Mika Godts, could become more complicated. Keeping Barcola’s future unresolved, at least publicly, would allow PSG to negotiate from a stronger position without the market adjusting to their newfound superior spending power. The theory also suggests that there are footballing reasons as well. Introducing replacements before confirming Barcola’s departure – one of PSG’s most talented players – would create a smoother transition within the squad and avoid unnecessary distractions in the dressing room. From Liverpool’s perspective, supporters of the theory argue that there is no discernible downside to cooperating with PSG’s supposed request other than continued fan unrest online. The clubs have enjoyed a positive working relationship in recent years ever since the free transfer of Georginio Wijnaldum to PSG in 2021. Under this interpretation, the public story would simply be buying time until PSG are ready to complete the rest of their transfer business. If this were true, the eventual announcement of Barcola’s move would appear as though it were a sudden breakthrough, despite the deal hypothetically having been completed behind closed doors long before. The caveat to this theory is that there is no way to prove this theory even if it’s an interesting way to imagine how two major clubs might operate in private negotiations.
