DAZN is continuing its expansion into local sports in the United States, this time reaching an agreement with Monumental Sports Network to add its direct-to-consumer streaming service to the platform. The agreement will see Monumental+ available as a subscription through DAZN. Monumental holds local rights to the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, along with a small number of local college sports teams. Monumental+ currently costs $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. A timeline for the launch on DAZN has yet to be revealed. DAZN has been rapidly expanding its presence in local sports in the United States over the last month. Last month, it announced an agreement to replace the Gotham Sports App as the exclusive streaming home of YES Network and MSG Networks, and reached exclusive media rights agreements with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Indiana Pacers. This agreement, however, is different. While those agreements make DAZN the exclusive streaming platform for those teams, this deal does not. Users will still be able to stream games on a standalone Monumental+ platform, or purchase the subscription through DAZN if they want. “Monumental Sports Network has incredible reach across the DMV, and we continue to pursue opportunities that engage fans wherever and however they choose to watch,” said Zach Leonsis, President of Media and New Enterprises for Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), in a statement. “DAZN has built a highly innovative global sports entertainment platform and offers an extensive portfolio of premium sports content. We’re pleased to give fans another way to watch our live games and other programming.” The agreement comes just a week after DAZN closed its acquisition of direct-to-consumer streaming company ViewLift. Monumental+ is powered by ViewLift technology. They are not alone. Altitude Sports, NESN, Space City Home Network and Chicago Sports Network also use the technology. This won’t be a groundbreaking or game-changing deal for either side. DAZN, while on an acquisition spree, has still not yet established itself as a major sports streaming home in the United States compared to better-known players like Prime Video, Peacock, and Netflix. Before acquiring a handful of local NBA rights this offseason, DAZN mostly aired minor niche sports like 3ICE in the United States. Still, it provides another way for fans in the DMV to subscribe to Monumental+ and allows DAZN to continue to push itself as a true local sports hub.
