Formula 1’s stewarding guidelines state drivers should receive 10-second stop-and-go penalties if they pass a red light at the pit lane exit during the grand prix. However the stewards opted for much more lenient penalties when Oliver Bearman and Gabriel Bortoleto broke the rule at Zandvoort last weekend. Reader @Alianora-La-Canta says this sets a bad precedent: The drivers had no way to know that no dangerous situations would be created by ignoring the red light. Therefore a penalty should have been issued that involved a sporting disadvantage. Even mitigating the penalty would be risky, if understandable (due to the point of the procedure, I recognise the risk should have been much lower than usual).
