Leigh coach airs Captain’s Challenge frustrations as solution offered following York win

Leigh boss Adrian Lam was left frustrated by another stop-start game as his side beat York, and believes Captain’s Challenge reviews should be decided within two replays of whatever incident is in question.
The Leopards claimed a 22-14 victory in their first-ever Super League game at home against the Knights on Friday evening, extending their run out to 12 wins in 15 games.
Taking a step closer to cementing their play-off spot, the hosts were made to work hard for the two competition points by a York side that never went away.
And the game itself lacked rhythm for large periods, with plenty of stoppages, as has become accustomed within Super League over the course of the campaign so far.
Adrian Lam’s Captain’s Challenge frustrations: ‘We’ve just got to speed the process up’
Friday night’s three Super League games all got underway at 8pm, with Leigh-York the second to reach its conclusion at 9.49pm – six minutes after the final hooter at Castleford-Hull KR and seven minutes prior to Wakefield-Leeds finishing.
Post-match, Leopards head coach Lam said: “There’s so many stoppages.
“We want the game to not have so many stoppages, in my opinion… or if there has to be a stoppage, let’s try and make it as quick as possible.
“That’s an area we could all try to help fix up.”
Not aiding the cause on Friday night at the Leopards’ Den were two successful Captain’s Challenges by visitors York made within the opening 17 minutes of the game.
The Knights successfully challenged two decisions made by on-field referee James Vella, including an adjudged knock-on by experienced hooker Paul McShane.
But while the correct decision was ultimately reached on both of those occasions, both reviews by the video referee were lengthy – and disrupted the flow of the game.
On the Captain’s Challenge system, Lam said: “I don’t know (whether we should keep it in the game).
“I think that it’s good, but we’ve just got to speed the process up. (We need to) try and get it done quickly, maybe within two frames.
“Some of them throughout the year have taken two-and-a-half or even three minutes, and if you get two or three of those (in a game), if they’re right, then they’ve still got a challenge up their sleeve.”
