TIM Sherwood believes Coventry City are ‘one of the favourites’ to suffer relegation from the Premier League this season. The newly-promoted Sky Blues began life back in the Premier League with a 3-0 defeat against Arsenal in the opening game of the season. And Sherwood, who spent a brief spell with the Sky Blues at the end of his playing career, believes Coventry’s transfer business means they will be battling to avoid the drop this campaign. Speaking to NetBet Football, Sherwood said: “You do so well to get a team promoted and then you just feel, ‘what chance have we got?’ “You’re always going to be fighting to stay in the league and to find enough points. “I’m not saying they’re not capable of doing it. It’s been done before. “But they’ll be one of the favourites to get relegated, unfortunately, and then Frank will be judged on that. “He shouldn’t be judged on the cards he’s been dealt. Frank’s done brilliantly for them, and the club have done brilliantly for him as well. “They’ve got to find a way straight away. Frank’s going to have to say, ‘I’m going to find a way to get 38 points.’ “They haven’t looked like they’ve done the business Sunderland did last season, who are a perfect example of how you should go about it. “So, they’ve got to try and emulate what Sunderland did, find a talisman. Find a man who wants to come to the club and want to help them out. “At the moment, you’d have to say it’s going to be very difficult for them to stay in the league. “If they do stay in the league, it’ll be a success, and then they can build again.” Part of Coventry’s summer recruitment drive saw fan-favourite midfielder Gustavo Hamer return to the club from Sheffield United. And Sherwood believes Hamer’s return represents good value for money for the quality the midfielder possesses. Sherwood added: “Gus Hamer knows the environment. He’s good, he’s direct and he’s got ability. “That’s the market they’re in, and I’d suggest he’s probably one of the best options they could find. “I can’t get too excited about it, but Coventry fans can because they are realists. “They know the club aren’t going to go out and get an [Alexander] Isak or a [Julian] Alvarez, it’s just not happening. “They have to fish in the pond where they know they can get players.”
