Ian Rapoport delivers harsh 'reality' on Ashton Jeanty's injury status

The Las Vegas Raiders got some unfortunate injury news over the weekend. Superstar running back Ashton Jeanty suffered an ankle sprain in practice on Sunday that had the team worried. The prognosis is better than expected, but Jeanty could still miss some time early in the regular season. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport gave an update on Jeanty's injury status after this weekend's scary moment. “My understanding, and this is something I reported with colleague Adam Schefter over the weekend, is that it's an ankle sprain believed to be more low than high. And not considered to be a major injury,” Rapoport said on The Insiders. “But it is a real injury. The reality is, there is a chance that Ashton Jeanty may not be on the field for Week 1.” Rapoport explained that many around the organization were originally worried that Jeanty had suffered a serious injury. Fortunately, their worst fears were averted and the star running back should return soon. He also added there is hope that Jeanty could suit up in Week 1, but it is not guaranteed to happen at this point. “They are hopeful that he will be [available in Week 1], but there is a chance that he won't be,” Rapoport added. “Which certainly does mean a couple of things. One, it's not the season-ending situation that I think some were scared about. And two, they're going to see a backup running back that they actually like a lot, and that might not be a bad thing either.” Rapoport is referring to rookie running back Mike Washington Jr., who has impressed during the preseason. He figures to play at least a rotational role throughout the season. But if Jeanty misses Week 1, Washington could be the lead back for at least one week. Hopefully Jeanty can get back to full health as soon as possible before an important 2026 season for the Raiders. Next up for the Raiders is their preseason finale against the 49ers on Aug. 27.
