New Tottenham Hotspur signing Savio Moreira de Oliveira has officially requested to be known simply as Savio, rather than Savinho, following his transfer from Manchester City. In Brazilian football, the diminutive suffix “-inho” means “little” or “young,” and is typically used for rising academy talents during their early years. Early in his career at Atletico Mineiro and during his initial Brazil call-ups, he was universally referred to as “Savinho.” However, during his standout loan spell at Girona in 2023-24, he predominantly wore “Savio” on his shirt. After finalising his move to Manchester City in July 2024, he temporarily retained “Savinho” to match senior national team kit branding and build recognition in the Premier League. Now, upon completing a marquee move to Tottenham for an initial £75 million, the Brazilian international has formally requested to drop the diminutive and return to his birth name. Tottenham have confirmed that his No. 17 kit will display “Savio” for the upcoming campaign. Speaking at his unveiling, the forward expressed delight at starting a new chapter in his career. “It’s taken a while, but I’m very happy to be here,” he said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.” The move to North London offers the winger a new tactical platform under De Zerbi, who is keen to utilise his 1v1 flair to devastating effect. Savio is unlikely to make his debut in Tottenham’s EFL Cup tie against Charlton Athletic on Wednesday, but could feature in Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United.
