Liverpool could be closing in on another exciting young South American talent.
According to Sports Witness, the Reds are now the leading club in the race to sign Deportivo Cali midfielder Matias Orozco, with negotiations reportedly at an advanced stage.
And there could be plenty more to this story.
Liverpool scouts watched Orozco
The report claims that Liverpool scouts were in attendance for Orozco’s most recent game on Sunday, suggesting the club’s interest is more than simply monitoring his progress from afar.
Journalist Diego Saviola has also reportedly suggested that the midfielder may have played his final game for Deportivo Cali, with a move to England potentially coming this week.
That’s certainly worth watching.
If Liverpool really are preparing to bring Orozco to Anfield, the next few days could be very interesting.
Deportivo Cali boss confirms negotiations
The strongest part of the story is that Deportivo Cali manager Rafael Dudamel has reportedly confirmed negotiations over Orozco’s departure are advanced.
That doesn’t necessarily mean Liverpool have completed a deal.
But when you combine that with reports of Liverpool scouts watching him and the suggestion that a move to England could happen this week, it certainly looks like something is developing.
A replacement for Curtis Jones?
This is where Liverpool supporters are likely to be particularly interested.
Curtis Jones has left Liverpool for Inter Milan, leaving a significant hole in the squad.
Many supporters expected Liverpool to bring in an established midfielder to replace him.
That hasn’t happened so far.
Instead, the club could potentially be looking towards the future.
And that’s where Orozco comes in.
Rather than immediately replacing Jones with another experienced Premier League midfielder, Liverpool could be looking to develop the next player who eventually fills that role.
Who is Matias Orozco?
Orozco is regarded as one of the promising young talents coming through at Deportivo Cali.
At his age, Liverpool wouldn’t necessarily be signing him expecting him to immediately walk into Iraola’s first team.
The idea would be to bring him into the club, develop him and gradually introduce him to the demands of English football.
That’s a completely different strategy to simply buying a ready-made replacement for Jones.
And perhaps that’s why Liverpool’s midfield recruitment hasn’t gone exactly as many supporters expected.
His friendship with Samuel Martinez could help
Another fascinating detail is the reported involvement of Samuel Martinez.
Martinez is said to have already agreed a deal with Liverpool himself and is reportedly a close friend of Orozco.
According to the report, Martinez has been trying to persuade his fellow youngster to make the move to Anfield.
If both players eventually arrive at Liverpool, having someone familiar alongside him could make Orozco’s transition considerably easier.
Moving from Colombia to England at a young age is a huge change.
Having a close friend at the same club could make a difference.
Liverpool are thinking about the future
This is the part of the story I find particularly interesting.
Liverpool don’t necessarily have to replace every departing player with an established signing.
The club can also look several years ahead.
Orozco could be one of those investments.
Liverpool have already shown that they are willing to give young players opportunities, and players such as Lewis Koumas, Trey Nyoni and other academy prospects are now closer to the first team.
Bringing in another highly-rated youngster would give Iraola another player to develop.
But Liverpool still need experience
There is one important caveat.
I like the idea of signing Orozco.
I think it’s sensible to invest in young talent.
But I wouldn’t view him as the immediate replacement for Curtis Jones.
Liverpool are trying to compete for the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cups.
They need experienced midfielders who can contribute now.
If Orozco arrives, that’s fantastic for the future.
But Liverpool still need to make sure the current squad has enough depth and experience to get through the season.
A smart long-term investment?
If Liverpool can get this deal over the line without paying an excessive fee, I think it would make a lot of sense.
The Reds could potentially be signing a player before his value explodes.
And if Orozco develops as Liverpool hope, this could eventually prove to be a very smart piece of recruitment.
It’s the kind of transfer that might not generate huge excitement immediately.
But three or four years down the line, supporters could be looking back and saying:
“Liverpool spotted him before everyone else.”
Could Orozco be heading to Anfield?
At this stage, we still need to be careful.
Liverpool haven’t officially confirmed a deal.
But the reported pieces are certainly intriguing.
Liverpool scouts were reportedly present.
Deportivo Cali’s manager has reportedly confirmed advanced negotiations.
A journalist has suggested Orozco could have played his final game for the club.
And his close friend Samuel Martinez is reportedly already heading towards Liverpool.
Something appears to be happening.
After losing Curtis Jones, Liverpool may not be replacing him immediately with another established midfielder.
Instead, they could be signing someone who might eventually become a major part of the next generation at Anfield.
Matias Orozco could be one for Liverpool supporters to watch very closely.
