CHRIS Woakes guided Warwickshire CCC to a dramatic one-wicket win against Sussex as the Bears continued their County Championship title bid. Veteran bowler Woakes scored the winning runs for the Bears at Edgbaston to bring an end to a thrilling contest. Warwickshire bowled Sussex out for 156 in the first innings as Woakes (4-36) starred with the ball while Michael Booth (3-9) enjoyed an economical 4.4 over spell. However, the Bears could only manage 161 all out in reply to take a slender five-run lead heading into the second innings. Sean Hunt (4-30) and Henry Crocombe (3-60) did the damage with the ball as Booth (34 not out) top scored with the bat for the home side. Sussex reached 207 all out in their second innings as opener and captain Tom Haines (67) recorded a half-century for the visitors. The Bears shared the wickets as Ethan Bamber (3-42), Ed Barnard (2-17), Booth (2-42) and Woakes (2-43) all took multiple scalps. Warwickshire needed 203 runs for victory on a difficult pitch as Dan Mousley (58) and Vansh Jani (62) both registered half-centuries. Jani scored his maiden first class half-century but the Bears found themselves in trouble on 179-8 still in need of 24 runs for victory. A five-wicket haul from Hunt (5-65) gave Sussex hope while Crocombe (3-71) accounted for Bamber (9) after the Bears had tied the game to set-up a dramatic conclusion. However, Woakes (23 not out) steered the Bears to a one-wicket win after number 11 batter Oliver Hannon-Dalby (0 not out) survived seven balls at the crease. The result means Warwickshire sit third in the County Championship Division One standings, just five points behind leaders Nottinghamshire. Warwickshire host Nottinghamshire in a mouth-watering fixture on Thursday, August 27 with play to begin at 11am at Edgbaston.
