August 25 – Barcelona have sharply criticised the “disproportionate use of force” used by Spanish police against the club’s supporters before Sunday’s LaLiga opener at Elche. A video circulating on social media showed officers striking fans with batons outside the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero after confiscating Estelada flags, the pro-independence symbol associated with Catalonia. The club did not hold back. “Barça condemn the disproportionate use of force against supporters,” it said, singling out the detention of one fan as lacking “the necessary justification and appropriateness.” It also defended the flags directly. “The Estelada is a legally endorsed symbol, and its display constitutes a legitimate exercise of freedom of expression. As such, it cannot in itself be considered an incitement to hatred or violence.” The episode quickly took on a political charge. Junts, Catalonia’s main pro-independence opposition party, condemned it fiercely, with leader Carles Puigdemont accusing Spain of “a deep, systemic hatred of Catalan identity.” Party congressional leader Míriam Nogueras went further still, saying “these animals have to pay.” Barça threatened further action, reserving “the right to take whatever action it deems appropriate to defend the integrity, rights and freedom of expression of its fans.” It’s an ugly episode that drags football into Spain’s long-running tensions over Catalan identity; a reminder of how quickly the game becomes a stage for something far bigger than sport. On the pitch, at least, Barça made a statement of their own, winning 5-0 through braces from Raphinha and Fermín López plus a debut goal from Karim Adeyemi. A commanding win, overshadowed by scenes outside the ground.
