The agent of Juventus and Italy full-back Andrea Cambiaso has revealed Manchester City “came very close” to signing the defender last year, offering Enzo Maresca's side fresh encouragement that a move could yet be revived. Manchester City became strongly linked with Andrea Cambiaso in 2025, when Pep Guardiola was understood to have identified the versatile left-back as a priority transfer target, only for a deal to ultimately fall through. This year there’s only been interest, both major and minor. Andrea isn’t considering the minor ones.” Giovanni Bia was clear, though, that only a move to an elite club would tempt his client to leave the Bianconeri. “Either he goes to a top club, where he’d be happy and that would benefit Juve, and then we can talk about it,” he added. “But he won’t go to other teams, even medium-sized English ones that might offer more money than Juventus.” Where would Andrea Cambiaso fit in at Manchester City? On the face of it, Manchester City have plenty of viable options at left-back this season, with last summer's signing Rayan Ait-Nouri and academy-grown Nico O’Reilly both vying for the spot, and Josko Gvardiol capable of playing there, too. What Andrea Cambiaso potentially offers, however, is a versatility that sets him apart from those already on the books. Crucially, the Italian can also be deployed on the right, which is a position currently shared by Matheus Nunes, Rico Lewis, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Like O'Reilly, the Italian is comfortable inverting into midfield and drifting into more advanced positions. Enzo Maresca built much of his Chelsea side around full-backs operating in exactly that fashion, regularly instructing Marc Cucurella to tuck inside rather than simply overlap. There is a financial logic to it, too. Having seen his stock fall over the past 18 months, Andrea Cambiaso would likely command a far more modest transfer fee than he would have done at his peak, potentially arriving as an affordable, high-ceiling squad option. The underlying ability that first attracted the Blues has not vanished: the left-back still racked up 36 appearances last season, chipping in with three goals and four assists despite an overall dip in form. Whether Manchester City choose to test Juventus’ resolve with a concrete proposal before the September 1 deadline remains to be seen, and Giovanni Bia’s insistence that only a “very important offer” will do suggests any deal would be far from straightforward. Yet with the door seemingly left ajar, and a manager in the dugout whose system could hardly suit the player better, Andrea Cambiaso is a name Manchester City supporters would be wise to keep in mind through the closing days of the window.
