Chris Wilder clarifies Sheffield United plans in key position after Premier League winner transfer clarity
Sheffield United have been linked with a move for former Premier League winner Asmir Begovic this summer, but Chris Wilder insists the Blades have not made an approach and is comfortable with the club’s current goalkeeping options for now.
Sheffield United have not made an approach for out-of-contract goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, boss Chris Wilder has revealed, as the Blades continue to monitor the free agent market this summer. The Blades allowed Luke Faxon to join Boston United on loan until January earlier in pre-season.
That has seen 16-year-old Tommy Betts step up as United’s third choice goalkeeper, travelling to Bochum recently while Ivo Grbic, the Croatian international, stayed behind at United’s Shirecliffe base.
The expectation was that Grbic would move on again this summer after two successive seasons out on loan, but he remains at Bramall Lane for the time being.
The Blades were recently linked with a move for Begovic, the former Premier League winner who is a free agent after leaving Leicester City earlier this summer. But Wilder told The Star that no approach has been made ahead of Sunday’s EFL Cup season opener at Mansfield Town.
”Ivo's still with us, so we have to take that into consideration,” said Wilder on his goalkeeping situation. “He's still our player.
“Tommy is somebody we really think a lot about. Luke Faxon's out on loan till January, so we're in a good position. If we have to run with Tommy as a third choice, then we're OK with that. We'll monitor the situation with Ivo.
“I would say one of the positions that there is a lot of players floating about is that third choice goalkeeper, so it's a position that doesn't really concern us at the moment, but it's something that we have got an eye on.”
