Injury issues meant he missed much of pre-season, the European tie against Kosovan side Malisheva and Hibs’ opening-day defeat to Motherwell. But he was worth the wait, as in his debut he came off the bench to provide an assist in Hibs’ 2-1 win over Shkendija. ‘I had a little niggle in my quad, and just around the time I signed I had an issue with my toe, so I missed Ireland and then you’re playing catch up. ‘It was frustrating but I knew it was only a week or two. So I need to stay fit now, and try and get more minutes on the pitch.’ The allure of Europe and playing for a club the size of Hibs was a key factor in Wright’s decision to make the switch from Plymouth Argyle. ‘It was nice to be out there and experience Easter Road on a European night. That is a big reason why I came here and obviously we got the win which is massive.’ Wright’s impact and quality off the bench against Shkendija was immediately noticeable. His play down the left flank not only posed a threat but also produced an end product. ‘That’s a big part of my game. I’ll give it 100% and challenge for every ball. When I’m playing well, I bring goals and assists to the team.’ In his brief time at the club, Wright has already been impressed by Owen Elding, particularly his sheer physicality — a frightening strength considering his age. ‘He’s got a baby face hasn’t he? But the size of him — he doesn’t look like a 20 year old lad. It’s going to be exciting playing with him. ‘From what I’ve seen he’s a real talent. Hopefully we can get each other on the score sheet and get goals and assists for one another.’ There is the second leg in North Macedonia to contend with and Hibs’ hopes of progressing in the UEFA Conference League have been made easier by the first leg win. But, Wright is under no illusions that the away leg will present a very different challenge to the first at Easter Road. ‘We focused on this game, but I’ve watched games of them myself and it looks a tough place to go. ‘I’m sure Hibs will brings lot of fans. It’s going to be completely different to here and hot, but that’s why we knew we needed a win tonight.’ Next up for Hibs is a trip to Ibrox to face Rangers on Sunday, and Wright is looking forward to experiencing the fixture for the first time while hoping to continue Hibs’ impressive record there in recent years. ‘It’ll be an amazing experience but I believe Hibs go there and do well.
