This partnership is frustrating for India. Keshara Nuwantha has been quite solid with his defence in the middle. There is not a lot the pitch is still offering, and the way some of the batters have batted has shown it. It is that they have managed to get starts but were unable to convert them into big scores. It might not be a bad ploy for Gill to think of Prasidh for a couple of overs. Sonal has gotten a start here; he is looking in sublime form once again. He scored a century and a half-century in the first Test and has gone past 30 here. Given how well he batted, Sri Lanka might be tempted to push him up the order a bit more, as they did with Kamindu Mendis. The only question is how his game is against high-quality seam. Saransh Jain has come into the attack here. He has not bowled too many overs, which is something that would happen when there are three spinners in an attack; one of them always tends to get underbowled. Additionally, Prasidh Krishna was quite superb, so he did get his fair share of overs. Will need a few wickets from Saransh Jain just to get some confidence on debut. Sri Lanka still needs over 100 runs to avoid a follow-on in this game; to be precise, 126 runs. With only three wickets in hand, it will take Sonal or any lower-order batter to play out of their skin for Sri Lanka to even get closer to that number. The interesting thing, though will be to see if India will impose a follow-on or will they bat again. Mohammed Siraj bowled a delivery which was down the leg side, and Niroshan Dickwella somehow managed to get the edge to the keeper. Big wicket that for the Indians. Dickwella is quite an attacking player, but it seemed like he was waiting for the short ball to come hence, the false shot came. Ravindra Jadeja has picked up the wicket of Pasindu Sooryabandara here. What an unlucky dismissal for the batter. There was a gap between the bat and the pad, and the ball took the inside edge and snuck in, rolled on, and hit the stumps. Well, it was a fabulous innings from Pasindu, but it did come to an end. As we update, Mohammed Siraj picked up Niroshan Dickwella. This is another partnership brewing between Sonal and Pasindu here. The latter has been exceptional with his innings, but he has not found any support. Kamindu Mendis looked pretty good earlier before he threw away his wicket, and now Sonal too has got a nice start, but the score India has got in the first innings of 503 is not about getting these starts; it's about getting those massive scores. Mohammed Siraj has come back for a spell here. He has been quite chatty with the batters throughout this series and has managed to get wickets. He had a lot of things to say to Kamil Mishara, who eventually played a false shot in the end. How much of that banter has impacted him, only he can answer. Saransh Jain has only bowled five overs in this Test match so far. With a left-hander in the middle, one would assume he could come into attack sooner rather than later. There was a huge partnership between Dickwella and Sonal in the first Test, where India lacked the option of an off-spinner, which made the attack look a little one-dimensional. Sonal Dinusha has walked into the middle. He has played superbly in the first Test, and from a Sri Lankan perspective, they would want a similar kind of performance here. Indian bowlers, though, after seeing him bat, might come up with some different plans to counter his batting here in the middle. Manav Suthar has picked up his second wicket, and it is Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva. It was a classic left-arm spinner's delivery; the ball went into the right-hander and turned sharply away. It is a very good breakthrough for India after the lunch break here. He is still young; a century here will get Sri Lanka into a very good position. They need to find a way to match two centuries here; that is what India has got in their innings. Ravindra Jadeja has come into the attack here to bowl. He has bowled well in the first game; he picked up three wickets in the second innings on a pitch which was helping. Today it might be all about bowling with discipline for him at this point: keep bowling tight lines and lengths and hope a mistake comes from the batters. Kamindu Mendis is playing some lovely shots here. He has swept Manav Suthar and hit one for six when he tried to toss the deliveries up. It is very interesting that both Keshara Nuwantha and Prabath Jayasuriya did find some turn yesterday, and all the Indian spinners are not getting as much turn as they should yet. Kamindu and Pasindu have put on a 50-run stand here. It has been a good effort from them when Sri Lanka was in a bit of trouble. They got together, and it has not been all caution; when the opportunity presented itself, they took their chances to go after the bowling, which is the right way to bat on this pitch. He is bowling around that off-stump and middle-stump channel, which is always a good place to start in a Test match debut. Sri Lankan batters, though, are looking to attack him and put the debutant under pressure, which is what they did in the warm-up game. It is an important innings for Kamindu Mendis. He started his Test career very well, but there has been a dip in recent times, which is expected for every player after the start he had. But now he needs to maintain his level. He has been posting low scores for too long. A good century, preferably, or an 80 would give him a huge confidence boost. Prasidh Krishna is streaming in here. He is bowling in the high 130s, and there is just more effort in the deliveries. Sri Lankan batters are struggling with the bounce he is able to create on this surface. Interestingly enough, he is getting plenty of steep bounce from this surface, which is unlikely on subcontinental surfaces. Prasidh Krishna has picked up Kamil Mishara, who was playing well. The bowler bowled a back-of-length delivery which took off. Mishara followed the ball with the bounce and edged it to the slip. Well, just as it felt Sri Lanka were looking good, they have lost another wicket here. Kamindu Mendis is the new batter in. Kamil Mishara has looked good so far in the short time he has batted. He is coming on the back of a lot of runs in Sri Lankan domestic cricket, and the pitch here in Colombo so far has been conducive to batting. If he can get some runs, it will do good not only to him but also help Sri Lanka score some runs. Siraj and Prasidh have started the day for India and have looked pretty threatening. There will be some moisture on the surface, which both bowlers can make the most of. From a Sri Lankan perspective, they'll want both Pasindu and Mishara to dig in and bat for long periods. So we sit with analysts, coaches, and everything and decide on what's the kind of length that we want to be bowling on different surfaces.
