'I've got to say' - Admission made on Blackpool youngster ahead of Grimsby Town opener The new EFL season gets underway this weekend - with Blackpool facing Grimsby Town in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Youngster Theo Upton is pushing for his place in the Blackpool team ahead of the new season. The teenager has featured regularly throughout the Seasiders’ summer schedule of friendlies, and has been able to impress head coach Ian Evatt. Across the past two campaigns, the midfielder has picked up five senior appearances, including his League One debut back in October. Alongside this, last term also saw him enjoy further first-team experience while out on loan with Matlock Town in non-league. After being absent at various points across the past few weeks, Albie Morgan, George Honeyman and Leighton Clarkson are all set to be back for Blackpool’s EFL Cup first round meeting with Grimsby Town at Blundell Park, but face competition from Upton in the matchday squad. “Theo will be available,” Evatt said. “I’ve got to say, he’s pushing to be in the team. He’s done ever so well this pre-season, I’ve been impressed with him. “Physically he looks better, and it’s great to have him around. He’s a Blackpool fan - one of our own, so credit to him. He’s nearly ready to start.”
