Shiyazh Pete’s big NFL moment brings Navajo Nation fans to Glendale
NEW MEXICO – Shiyazh Pete drew a standing ovation as thousands representing the Navajo Nation cheered him during a 34 to 13 preseason win.
Former Shiprock Chieftain High School alum, Shiyazh Pete, helped lead the Cowboys’ postgame celebration Saturday night after Dallas beat the Arizona Cardinals 34-13.
Thousands of people representing the Navajo Nation showed their support for Pete inside the stadium in Glendale, and fans gave him a standing ovation in the fourth quarter when he entered the game.
Pete made history as the first member of the Navajo Nation to sign with an NFL team.
“The standing ovation was incredible. I want to take the moment to thank all the fans and the people who showed up to support me, and to celebrate my name and to wear my jersey. I lost count of how many Navajo Nation flags I saw. I saw a Salish Nation flag as well, which was awesome,” Pete said.
