As the NFL preseason rolls toward its midway point, every wannabe gridiron guru is putting together predictions and outlooks for his team and all the others. They are probably eyeing their final few picks for the fantasy squad, and they’re sure that this will be the greatest year of their football fandom ever. For fans of the Chicago Bears, that enthusiasm typically centers around one name. That same hope is permeating throughout the Windy City and beyond. And much of that winning vibe is being generated by the continuing emergence of quarterback Caleb Williams. As he enters his third season after being taken first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, he’s already established himself as one of the greats in the game today. Now? He’s looking to join the all-time elite. “A goal of mine is to be the top of them all. I want to be the best quarterback not only for Chicago but in the league,” Williams has said. “And that starts with consistency. That starts with me preparing the right way… “It’s important to me; I don’t get up to be mediocre.” By National Football League standards, that usually means two things for a QB: the passer has to win at least one Super Bowl ring, and they have to win the Most Valuable Player Award on an occasion or two as well. The former will be determined by how Da Bears perform as a unit. But as far as the latter goal? This is shaping up to be as good a time as ever for the former USC star to claim the trophy. One that matches the Heisman he won in his final season as a Trojan. His head coach in Chi-Town seems to believe that his franchise player is on the verge of something big. “He’s got it all,” Bears head coach Ben Johnson said last month during training camp, according to a ProFootballTalk.com report. “There’s really nothing he can’t do. Elite arm talent, playmaking ability, escape ability. He has his legs that he can hurt a defense with, and there’s just so many layers to who he is as a player.” Do the Bears Have the Blueprint for Caleb Williams to Capture the NFL MVP Award? Bears are Confident in Their Leader Heading into the 2026-27 campaign, Johnson says he envisions the scrambling, playmaking Williams evolving into an even more complete player. Chicago’s head man has faith that Caleb can be consistently exceptional in terms of his accuracy, and has even set the bar at a 70% completion rate. It’s a challenge that Williams will face head-on, as he learns to have more poise in the pocket. That tie of calm, controlled effort – rather than having a gunslinger’s mentality – should lead to plenty of victories for the Monsters of the Midway this season. And along with that, plenty of MVP consideration for the quarterback standing in the middle of it all. The Chicago coaching staff isn’t asking too much of Caleb Williams. They are just working on strategies that will make him a better quarterback. They’re asking him to become the quarterback who makes the Bears one of the NFL’s best offenses. If Williams can turn that ambition into reality, the MVP conversation may take care of itself. When the dust clears, Caleb Williams says the MVP Award will certainly be within his sights. He says he just needs to focus on the plan at hand. “Get the completion percentage up. Keep the offense on the field more.
