Kevin Owens confronted CM Punk on this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown, and tensions quickly escalated between the two ahead of their Undisputed WWE Championship match. Owens made his WWE return at SummerSlam 2026 (Night Two) after SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis inserted him into the number one contender’s match for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Owens went on to win the bout, earning himself a championship opportunity against Punk. During this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown, Owens came face-to-face with Punk and made it clear that he has never bought into the idea that Punk has changed. Owens argued that Punk only showed his arrogance by offering Cody Rhodes a rematch despite Owens being the number one contender for his championship. He ultimately referred to Punk as an “arrogant sociopath.” Punk fired back by reminding Owens of everything he believes he did to help open doors for wrestlers like him. He said, “If anybody has benefited from what I went through to get here and the things I did and said to knock down doors for guys like you, you benefited the most. This place called me skinny fat. You think they were waiting around, holding their breath for Kevin Owens?” The confrontation continued to intensify, with Owens telling Punk that seeing what he has become has motivated him to make sure wrestling never changes him in the same way. He said, “I should also thank you because you’ve also shown me what not to do. What not to become. How not to treat people around you. You showed me that somebody’s ego can get so inflated, they actually start believing the crap that comes out of their mouth when they call themselves the Best in the World. Dude, you must be so lonely on that pedestal you put yourself on. Meanwhile, thank you. Because seeing what you’ve become has made me determined to not let this business turn me into a miserable piece of sh** like you.” Later in the show, Owens appeared during a backstage conversation between Sami Zayn and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis. During the segment, Owens revealed that he wants his Undisputed WWE Championship match against Punk to take place on the August 21 episode of SmackDown in Toronto. With Owens pushing to have the match in front of his hometown crowd, it remains to be seen whether Aldis and WWE will grant his request.
