Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn finally shared the screen again on the Aug. 7 edition of WWE SmackDown. Their latest reunion proved that even the strongest friendships can find themselves caught in a championship crossfire. While the longtime allies spoke respectfully, the conversation hinted that the road ahead may not be as smooth as their embrace at SummerSlam suggested. The backstage exchange came just days after Owens returned from a 17-month absence due to a neck injury and won a Fatal Four-Way Match at SummerSlam to become the No. 1 contender to CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship. Although the pair were happy to see each other again, title ambitions quickly entered the picture — and that’s where the cracks began to show. Sami Zayn warns Kevin Owens about his own WWE title ambitions The segment began with Sami Zayn confronting SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis over the SummerSlam title picture. He argued that the last-minute additions to the No. 1 contender’s match cost him a singles opportunity. Before Aldis could respond further, Owens arrived, prompting an honest conversation between the two friends. Zayn admitted he was genuinely happy to see Owens back but said his surprise return came directly at his expense. Kevin Owens didn’t dodge the issue, apologizing and acknowledging that his comeback affected Zayn’s chances. However, he reminded his friend that he had earned his position. Owens noted that before suffering his neck injury, his last victory came against Zayn himself. Owens also added that Zayn would’ve made the same decision had their roles been reversed. The conversation then shifted toward Punk’s championship. Zayn made it clear that he wants Owens to defeat the champion. Moreover, Sami Zayn even hinted that he was willing to help if needed. Owens politely declined, saying he wanted to accomplish the goal on his own after waiting so long for another opportunity. Still, the reunion didn’t end with a full-on tag team celebration. In the final moments, Zayn delivered a subtle but significant warning, telling Owens not to expect him to stop chasing CM Punk’s title just because they’re friends. It wasn’t a heel turn — just a reminder that when championship gold is on the line, friendships sometimes have to walk a tightrope. The tense exchange was a far cry from one of WWE’s most memorable reunions in 2023. After months of tension during The Bloodline storyline, Owens returned to save Zayn from an attack on SmackDown before the two embraced in an emotional moment. That reunion paved the way for their WrestleMania 39 victory, where they defeated The Usos to capture the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship. Their victory officially ended The Usos’ historic, record-setting tag team championship reign at 622 days. This time, however, championship dreams have put their friendship on a much different path. Owens is set to challenge Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship on Aug. 21 in Toronto. Meanwhile, Zayn has made it clear that his own pursuit of the top prize isn’t going anywhere, meaning this friendship could soon find itself between a Rock and a hard place.
