CAMBRIDGE United boss Harris will be taking on Millwall for the first time since stepping down as Lions head coach in December 2024. Harris’ U’s host Millwall in the EFL Cup Second Round on Tuesday evening. The Lions beat Queens Park Rangers in the opening round, while Cambridge beat Barnet 2-0. Harris, Millwall’s all-time leading scorer, has enjoyed two stints in charge of the Lions. After short spells as interim manager, he was first appointed permanently in April 2015, guiding Millwall back to the Championship before coming within three points of a second-tier top-six finish in 2018. He stepped down the following season. After spells in charge of Cardiff City, Gillingham and Cambridge United, he returned in February 2024, with the Lions just one point above the drop zone. Harris guided Millwall to eight wins in their final 13 games, steering them clear of danger and to a thirteenth-place finish. After a strong start to the 2024-25 season, with the Lions beating eventual top-two finishers Burnley and Leeds United en route to four consecutive wins, his side’s form began to dip in late November, and Harris stepped down in mid-December. Alex Neil replaced him a few weeks later, having spoken to Harris before accepting the job. “What’s funny is I know Neil differently from how everybody else knows Neil because he spent so much time here,” Neil told the media following the Lions’ 3-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday. “But I know him as an opposing manager. “I’ve always got on well with Neil. I spoke to him before I came here for the job. It’ll be nice to share the touchline. I’m sure he’ll want to win, but I can assure you we want to win as well.” Harris returned to Cambridge in February 2025 but was unable to prevent their relegation to League Two. He guided them back to the third tier last season via automatic promotion after they finished third. The U’s are currently fifth in League One, having beaten Wigan Athletic on the opening day before drawing with Bromley.
