WWE SmackDown RESULTS AND LIVE BLOG FOR AUG. 7
But now the dreams and waking screams that ever last the night. So build the wall, behind it crawl and hide until it’s light, but me? I’m just here to liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you, folks.
The show opens with a memorial graphic for the late great Dory Funk, Jr.
We get a flyby of Philadelphia, the greatest city on the planet, and then the usual montage of talent arriving at the arena.
“American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes makes his entrance and gets on the mic.
He calls Randy Orton out, asking him where he’s at and inviting him to the ring. He wants to fight, right now, here on SmackDown.
When Orton doesn’t answer, Cody addresses Philadelphia directly, asking what they wanna talk about. He talks about good memories, about losing Dory Funk, Jr, about WrestleMania 40 just down the street, about this past weekend when he lost with his boots on to the Best in the World CM Punk.
He’s going to assume that CM Punk did not know that Randy Orton was gonna roll into the ring and hit him with an RKO--
Enter CM Punk.
Rhodes asks him directly if he knew about Randy Orton and Punk levels him with placid “you know the answer already” stare, a little shake of the head “no” and then he says it kinda hurts Cody has to ask but of course he didn’t know, he didn’t see the drive-by RKO, and he’s not happy about it. So if Rhodes wants to two-man power trip this place, he’ll be happy to go in the back and find Randy and beat his ass.
Cody says he needs an answer from Randy Orton and he’s gonna find him and kick his ass himself tonight. He cedes the ring to CM and takes his leave.
As he leaves, Punk calls after him and tells him as far as their own unfinished business goes, all he needs to do is say when.
Before Cody gets to the stage--
Enter Kevin Owens.
Rhodes offers his mic on the ramp and Owens takes it and heads to the ring.
Kev gets in Punk’s face and they jaw for a good minute off-camera until general manager Nick Aldis appears on the apron behind them with a nasty shiner.
Owens notices him first and they both assure Nick that they’re professionals and they can handle it. Punk says he notices KO is in his gear, does he want his title shot now? Owens says his gear is shorts, not pants, but yes, all he’s wanted to do for the past seventeen months has been wrestle, and that’s a long time to be told you might not ever get to do it again.
And it’s even worse when it’s not your choice, but he’s been proving people wrong his entire career. CM golf claps him and “You still got it!” chants go up to which Owens says he never lost it. People have been telling him he has to give Punk a second chance, he’s changed, he’s a different guy, but Kev never bought it because he knows who CM Punk.
And he’s out here proving him right by telling Cody go to ahead and “just say when” when KO is #1 contender. But he’s not surprised he’s looking past him, he thinks he’s better than him, hell Punk thinks he’s better than everyone, and that proves that he’s still the same arrogant sociopath Owens has always known him to be.
Punk gets in his face and says some people love his arrogance, it’s what brought him to the dance, it’s why millions of people cheered for him while he was away and he understands the flipside of why some people don’t like it, but he always backs it up in the ring and the title around his waist means that he’s the Best in the World.
But he doesn’t understand why Owens doesn’t appreciate his arrogance because if anybody benefitted from his arrogance it’s KO. He knocked down walls and broke barriers for people like Kevin! This place called him skinny fat, you think they were really holding their breath for Kevin Owens?
KO says it’s been ten years since the last time he’s been world champion and he’s imagined winning it back constantly over that time but he never guessed something would happen to make it better, but now he doesn’t just get to win the WWE Championship, he gets to humble CM Punk and beat his ass for it.
Punk says it’s good to have impossible dreams; sometimes he dreams so big it scares him and he can see Owens is a little scared right now. He’d like some gratitude because without him, Kevin Owens would be a 9-to-5er working indies on the weekends and calling Punk for tickets to WWE shows. He knows he’s the Best in the World and so do they, and look at Owens.
Kev says yeah, look at him, he should be grateful, he should thank CM for the trail he blazed and the doors he kicked down for people like him, that’s true. But he also should thank Punk for showing him what not to do, what not to become, how not to treat people around you. For showing people their ego can get so inflated from calling themselves Best in the World.
He says Punk must be so lonely on his pedestal, but he thanks him for the determination to not let this business turn him into a miserable piece of shit like CM Punk.
Punk gets in his face, Aldis and the referee corps get in the ring and a shoving match breaks out! Pulled apart, they keep talking trash but soon enough CM backs down and leaves the ring.
Charlotte Flair is interviewed backstage absolutely encrusted in gems.
Today she’s not fighting to be top girl, she’s not fighting for her career or her legacy, she’s fighting for Alexa Bliss and she’s gonna kick Jade Cargill’s ass tonight. Two alphas, one ring, and if Jade is half the woman she says she is, she’ll come alone.
Trick Williams cuts a promo in Gorilla.
He says he’s having his rematch tonight and Baron Corbin is only champion by cheating and taking shortcuts, and at the end of the day he doesn’t have what it takes to beat Trick Williams. Nothing is gonna stop him, he’s doing it for himself, for Lil Yachty, and tonight he’s gonna whoop that trick for Philadelphia.
Trick then makes his entrance ahead of our next match, followed by Baron Corbin, who drives onto the stage on a motorcycle like a bootleg Bikertaker with Rob Halford’s haircut.
Baron Corbin (c) vs. Trick Williams (WWE Men’s United States Championship
Action quickly to the floor, Williams lands a crossbody over the timekeeper’s barricade and wipes Corbin out before soaking in the adoration of the crowd and sending us to break.
Back from commercial, Corbin taking control, working Williams over in the ring. Trick mounts a comeback, flapjack to a kip-up, big chop in the corner, pulling Baron up, Book End denied, fireman’s carry, Williams slips out and hits the Cyclone Kill! Deep Six in return… NO DEAL! Trading right hands on their knees and to their feet, big clubbing blows, Trick ducks under and hits a jumping neckbreaker!
Clothesline sends Corbin to the floor, out after him, drawing him up, the champion rams him into the ringpost and hammers him with elbows! Baron brings the title belt into the ring, referee Dan Engler takes it from him, Trick hits the Book End… STILL NO! Williams fired up in the corner, charging in, float over End of Days, off the ropes… TRICK SHOT CONNECTS BUT CORBIN GETS A HAND ON THE ROPES!
Corbin manages to clobber Trick without Engler seeing him…
Baron Corbin wins by pinfall with a title belt to the face, retaining the WWE Men’s United States Championship.
Nick Aldis is on the phone backstage when Sami Zayn rolls up to him.
He hasn’t had a chance to talk to him about SummerSlam but he’s real happy with him for how it went, his kid in the ring and everything, he can admit he cried. Is Nick gonna congratule him on SummerSlam? Aldis says “here we go again” and Sami unloads about how unfair it is for GUNTHER and Kevin Owens to have been added to the match.
Kevin Owens rolls up with a “sorry bud” look on his face.
Nick Aldis goes to take his leave and KO holds him long enough to say he wants his title match in Toronto on August 21.
Owens goes in for a hug and Zayn says he’s happy to see him back. Kevin thinks he’s being sarcastic but of course Sami says he’s honest and he’s happy for him he just needs KO to understand acknowledge that his return 100% screwed him and came at his expense. Owens admits that him combing back like he did did mess things up for Zayn.
Sami asks for an apology, Kev says he’s sorry he was affected that way but he wants Zayn to accept that if he was in his situation he would have done the same thing. And people say he didn’t earn it but in his last match before he got hurt, he beat one of the guys in that match, he beat Sami.
Zayn accepts his logic and reiterates that he’s happy for him and kinda offers to help him out in the title match but Kevin stops him and says he’s been waiting for this for a long time and he wants to do it himself. Again Sami accepts this but he says Owens has to accept that he’s gonna keep going after the things he wants, too.
And so we go to break.
Back from commercial, Baron Corbin is interviewed backstage.
He takes offense to his wins over Trick Williams being characterized as upsets. He’s been back for a cup of coffee and he’s already got a title in his hands, the first of many, so how is he the underdog? Because the fans didn’t think he can do it? That’s the story of his career and he hopes the fans think they’re stupid now.
As far as he’s concerned, Trick Williams will never hold this title again and as far as he’s concerned there’s not a man in the locker room who can take this title from him.
Carmelo Hayes attacks him and lays him out against a garage door and tells him he’s already seen Nick Aldis and he’s got a title match for his hometown next week.
We get a recap of Chelsea Green winning the Interim WWE Women’s Championship.
The ring is festooned for a celebration and Chelsea Green makes her entrance and gets on the mic.
She says she loves us and thanks everyone for their support and says we’re the reason she walked out of the match as champion. And she thanks herself for also being the reason we’re here tonight, and lastly she thanks her beautiful stunning gorgeous blonde bombshell of a best friend, Tiffany Stratton.
Enter Tiffany Stratton.
Green says she’s sorry for what happened on Sunday but she knows their friendship is stronger than that and she called her out here to make a toast to strong female friendship. Stratton says that’s why she’s out here, she wanted to talk to her about something.
Enter Fatal Influence.
Jacy Jayne says that’s enough cringy soap opera and if it weren’t for Tiffany she’d have been in the ladder match and she’d have won the title. But they’re not here to ruin Chelsea’s tragic little moment, Jacy’s just here to take away the thing Stratton loves the most, and since her bestie destroyed all her hopes and dreams of being Tiffy Two Titles she’d like to put the final nail in the coffin by taking her United States Championship and making her Tiffy No Titles.
Stratton offers a title match next week in return for a tag title match right here, right now. The Fatals have a huddle about it and Jacy accepts and calls for a referee!
Ryan Tran makes his way down and we’re off… after the break!
Chelsea Green & Tiffany Stratton vs. Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) (c) (WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship)
Back from commercial just in time for the bell! Reid and Green to start, collar and elbow, Lainey takes her down, hooks her arm, Chelsea ducks a lariat and slides to the floor! Sidestep a slingshot senton atomico, mat slam for one, whip Reid to the corner, rising knee, tag to Stratton! Whip reversed, drop down, sidestep a dropkick, Codebreaker countered with a handspring and Tiffany dropkicks her right into a tag!
Arm drag for Henley, a second is blocked, Fallon passes her into the corner and hammers her with right hands! Snapmare, heel kick, Stratton gets a handspring Stunner on the rebound, Reid gets run in and set on the second, tag to Green, hip attack and knees in the ropes in stereo and then stereo dives after the Fatals fall to the floor and we go to break!
Back from commercial, Green cuts Reid off and gets a tag! Stratton in with lariats, block a kick, vicious back elbow, dropkick clears the apron, off the ropes, cartwheel Alabama Slam connects! Tiffany heads up top, senton atomico connects but Fallon is right there to deck her with an elbow!
Stratton falls into the corner, Chelsea tags in, low bridge sends Henley to the floor, thinking Killswitch but Lainey blocks and puts her in the corner. Enzuigiri connects, Green returns the favor, military press slam sends Reid flying! Ace Crusher on Fallon, hooking Lainey but Jacy Jayne pulls Stratton off the apron!
A distracted Green gets cut off and double-teamed…
Fatal Influence win by pinfall with Fatal Flaw on Chelsea Green, retaining the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
Post-match, Lash Legend and Nia Jax come from out of nowhere and attack Chelsea Green and Tifany Stratton!
Jax goes and grabs the Interim WWE Women’s Championship and stands tall over Green’s unconscious body with the title!
Damian Priest is interviewed backstage.
He asks if he’s supposed to be afraid of the Tongans now that they got Haku but he’s got Ron Killings and he’s Damian Priest and he’s not afraid.
War Raiders roll up to say they’re gonna be double champs. Ron “the Truth” Killings slides out from behind Priest and says they’re not afraid of luchadors, the Road Warriors, OR the Legion of Doom, and he went to Nick Aldis and agreed to a three-way match against War Raiders and the Tongans.
Erik and Ivar are stoked and Priest is upset that their match against the War Raiders was title for title with the AAA Tag Team Championship on the line but now they have to defend theirs in a three-way, and we go to break.
Back from commercial we get a retrospective on Brock Lesnar’s career.
Randy Orton makes his entrance cautiously, keeping lookout for Cody Rhodes after his promo earlier.
After a moment in the ring, Cody obliges by making his entrance ready to fight! Orton dodges him, Rhodes gets on the mic and tells him he knows he wants it and to get in the ring right now. Randy fakes him out by going to the apron and immediately turning around, and now general manager Nick Aldis is here with road agents and referees.
Rhodes says he knows Randy doesn’t answer to anybody, but after all they’ve been through he thinks he’s owed an explanation. Orton scoffs and says he doesn’t owe Cody jack and Rhodes asked for this, remember? Back during the Road to WrestleMania he asked for the very best version of Randy Orton and gave him permission!
He calls Cody a cocky arrogant son of a bitch for giving permission to him, a 14-time world champion, the Viper, the Legend Killer, and he played his game at WrestleMania and gave him the best version of Randy Orton and what did Rhodes do? Beat him, 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring, congratulations.
But in that moment something deep down snapped and he first heard an echo and it got louder and louder and the voices were clear he had to do whatever he could to put Cody on all fours and kick him in the face as hard as he could! And then in that moment Randy knew that the best version of himself wasn’t gonna bring home number fifteen…
…but the worst version of Randy Orton can and will. He doesn’t care who has it, he’s gonna take it back, whether it’s Owens or Punk, but he won’t be taking it from Cody because as long as there’s air in his lungs he’s gonna do whatever he has to in order to make sure Rhodes is never ever WWE Champion again.
Cody asks him what he’s talking about and says he’s not held to the standards of the championship and now he doesn’t have to turn the other cheek. Talk about the worst version of Randy Orton, what about the worst version of Cody Rhodes? He doesn’t have to be a damn good guy anymore, forget about the title, call yourself the Legend Killer? Look around, Randy, you’re the last legend left in WWE.
So Cody’s question is who kills Randy Orton?
Backstage, Sami Zayn is again unloading to a catatonic Johnny Gargano while Candice LeRae stands by dispassionately.
Zayn admits he’s a little jealous of Kevin Owens because he gets to look CM Punk in his face and tell him what a fraud he is.
Candice clears her throat and the camera pans to show CM Punk is standing right there.
He asks if we’re gonna do this again, Sami crying about him behind his back. He knows Zayn doesn’t like him but at least Kevin Owens has the decency to say it to his face. Sami tells him he’s a fraud and if he didn’t have a broken bone in his hand he’d break his face right now. Punk says no, if he could have he would have, and he tells Zayn he’ll give Johnny or Candice a title shot before he gives Sami another one, back of the line.
Sami yells at Johnny for just laying there and letting Punk talk to him like that, LeRae asks him why he’s taking it out on them and Zayn walks off.
Jade Cargill and the Baddies are interviewed backstage.
B-FAB says week after week they’ve proven that Charlotte Flair is nothing compared to Jade, who is everything she isn’t and the only thing she’s missing is that title around her waist. Cargill says she’s gonna whoop that ass and we go to break.
Back from commercial, Nikki Bella cuts a promo about her injury and letting Paige come in and replace her and then she went and lost the tag titles? She did everything to return and fight alongside her sister and then Paige went and lost their WrestleMania match for them and that was her final straw.
She blames Paige for Brie Bella’s broken shoulder and says she’s gonna make sure she feels that pain and whatever career she has left is pure misery.
Commentary hypes up next week’s show.
Shinsuke Nakamura cuts a video promo on the Tongans, saying they don’t need to remember who they are, they need to remember who he is. He’s the King of Strong Style, he’s back, and this time he will not be alone. He’s starting a war and this time he won’t be a one-man army. His tells the Tongans they’re running out of time.
Charlotte Flair makes her entrance ahead of our main event, followed shortly thereafter by Jade Cargill and her Baddies, who come to the stage but don’t come all the way to ringside.
Charlotte Flair vs. Jade Cargill
Collar and elbow, they struggle around the ring and through the ropes to the floor! Cargill shoves Flair into the apron and then back inside, off the ropes, shoulder block connects, Charlotte pops up and poses behind her, off the ropes, float over, chop block, flash kick, off the ropes with a knee lift!
Snapmare into the rolling figure four headscissors, Jade counters with a bridging pin, rolls to the floor, electric chair facebuster into the announce desk and sends us to break!
Back from commercial, Flair bounces Cargill’s face off the ringpost and catches her with a German suplex on the rebound! Trading elbows in the middle of the ring, Charlotte changes gears to chops, sidesteps a boot and drops Jade with a big elbow! Off the ropes, Cargill counters a handspring with a big boot!
Big boot from the apron, Flair up top, diving crossbody, Jade rolls her through, jackknife pin, Charlotte bridges out of it, fighting over a backslide, Cargill fights out with kicks! Flair staggered, spin-out Argentine backbreaker rack powerbomb… CHARLOTTE KICKS OUT! Jade gets her up in the turnbuckles… AVALANCHE LIGER BOMB CAN’T KEEP CHARLOTTE FLAIR DOWN!
Cargill jawing at her, grabbing her by the jaw and drawing her to her feet, trading slaps, Flair sidesteps a boot, chop block, big kick, spinning toehold, into the figure four leglock, bridging back and she’s got the Figure Eight… BUT THE BADDIES ARE HERE AND MICHIN BREAKS IT UP!
ALEXA BLISS IS HERE TO EVEN THE ODDS!
She’s got Lilly with her and the lights go out!
TATUM PAXLEY IS ON THE RINGPOST AND SHE TAKES THE BADDIES OUT WITH A DIVING CROSSBODY!
Back in the ring, malfunction at the junction, Flair hooks Jade and kisses her forehead… SISTER ABIGAIL DDT! But Charlotte goes up top… AVALANCHE NATURAL SELECTION IS A LITTLE LOOSE BUT IT ENDS THE MATCH!
Charlotte Flair wins by pinfall with an avalanche Natural Selection.
Post-match, Alexa and Charlotte and Tatum celebrate together, raising each other’s hands.
That’s the show, folks.
