August 24 – Newcastle United have agreed to purchase the 260-acre Woolsington Hall estate to build a £190 million training complex, subject to planning permission. The men’s first team is aiming to move in for the 2029/30 season. The estate, south of Newcastle International Airport, currently holds a derelict listed country house and parkland, with a formal planning application expected in early 2027 and dedicated women’s and girls’ facilities to follow at a later phase. CEO David Hopkinson called it a “landmark moment” for the club. “Subject to planning permission, our proposed performance complex will create the world’s best performance environment for our teams,” he said, promising purpose-built facilities “geared towards developing sustainable success.” The project is funded by owners the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and RB Sports & Media, as the club builds the infrastructure to attract and keep top players, following its purchase earlier this year of much of the historic Leazes Terrace beside St James’ Park. The move revives an idea first floated more than three decades ago, when former owner Sir John Hall bought the estate in 1994 envisioning an academy. Hopkinson thanked “Sir John and the Hall family,” and the club has pledged to restore and preserve the listed structures and parkland. Chief operating officer Brad Miller stressed the sensitivity of the task. “It is a highly complex project,” he said, vowing to “build something iconic that the club, fans, community and region can be proud of.” The council welcomed the investment while insisting on due scrutiny.
