Everton travel to Preston North End in the Carabao Cup second round on Wednesday, with David Moyes expected to make changes following Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.
Moyes has not provided any firm selection clues, so this predicted XI is based on Everton’s current injury position and the senior players most likely to need minutes.
Mark Travers is the obvious candidate to replace Jordan Pickford in goal, while Nathan Patterson and Adam Aznou could come in at full-back.
Jake O’Brien should also receive an opportunity in central defence, although Moyes may retain captain James Tarkowski to provide experience alongside him.
Everton may have limited midfield options
Everton’s midfield injuries could restrict the extent of Moyes’ rotation.
Christian Nørgaard was unavailable against Palace, Tim Iroegbunam has an adductor problem, and James Garner is still working his way back after surgery.
Hayden Hackney and Harrison Armstrong may therefore be required again, although Carlos Alcaraz could return in a deeper-lying role.
Brennan Johnson made his Everton debut from the bench against his former club and should be in contention for his first start. Merlin Röhl could move further forward after filling in at right-back on Saturday, with Tyrique George retaining his place on the opposite flank.
Beto is likely to replace Thierno Barry through the middle.
This would still represent seven changes from the opening-day side, while giving Moyes enough senior experience to avoid taking a difficult tie lightly.
Predicted Everton XI: Travers; Patterson, O’Brien, Tarkowski, Aznou; Hackney, Armstrong; Johnson, Alcaraz, George; Beto.
