The Tottenham midfielder has been the subject of a loan proposal from Turkish club.
Tottenham Hotspur have primarily focused on outgoings in recent weeks. Several academy talents have either been sold or loaned out, with Ashley Phillips being the latest to leave the club and join Championship club Middlesbrough permanently.
Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario are expected to follow suit out of N17 in the coming weeks, while Lucas Bergvall’s future remains up in the air. Well it looks like Bergvall isn’t the only central midfielder wanted away from Spurs.
Besiktas eye shock swoop for Conor Gallagher
According to Turkish daily Sozcu, Besiktas have tabled a loan proposal for Conor Gallagher. It is unclear what the terms of the loan are and whether it contains an option or an obligation to buy, but the Turkish club are ‘awaiting a response’ from Tottenham.
Tottenham beat Aston Villa to sign Conor Gallagher in a £35m deal from Atletico Madrid during the January transfer window. The former Chelsea man’s arrival was met with mixed reactions, as several supporters questioned whether he was the right answer to the club’s midfield concerns. And those questioning his signing were vindicated, as he struggled to initially make an impact in N17.
Under Roberto De Zerbi, Gallagher found his mojo. He became a regular in De Zerbi’s side, operating in a free role behind the striker. The England international flourished as a No.10, adding energy, bite, running power and creativity to the side. Soon, the midfielder became a vital cog in De Zerbi’s side, and Gallagher’s contributions in saving Spurs from relegation cannot be overlooked.
The midfielder recently credited De Zerbi for helping restore his confidence levels. De Zerbi clearly needs Gallagher to dominate the central areas in his high-pressing and aggressive system to secure crucial European qualification next year. His relentless pressing, energy and work rate perfectly suits the tactical blueprint being implemented by the 47-year-old.
Spurs unlikely to let Gallagher leave
As far as Besiktas are concerned, their preference for a temporary move for Gallagher reflects their broader transfer strategy under new boss Vincenzo Italiano. By utilising a loan arrangement with an option or obligation to buy, the Super Eagles aim to preserve flexibility while assessing squad fit.
However, letting go Gallagher after only six months would be hugely surprising move from the North Londoners. From the player’s end, he will want to get assurances from the gaffer over his role in the upcoming season. The big-money acquisitions of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali have solidified the midfield unit, but at the same time, made competition within the squad intense.
So, the Epson-born talent will have to keep himself fit and work extremely hard to guarantee regular minutes at Tottenham.
