Greek swimmers continued their impressive performances at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto. The second day of competition delivered two gold, three silver and one bronze medal for the Greek team, placing Greece second on the medal table behind host nation Italy. Greece secured a one-two finish in the women’s 100m butterfly, with Anna Ntountounaki taking gold in 58.17 and Georgia Damasioti winning silver in 58.49. Apostolos Christou also claimed gold in the men’s 50m backstroke, finishing first in 24.74, comfortably ahead of Italy’s Francesco Lazzari, who took silver in 25.12. Vangelis Makrygiannis challenged for a podium place but finished fifth in 25.36. Dimitris Markos collected two medals, taking silver in the men’s 800m freestyle with a time of 7:55.05 and bronze in the 200m freestyle in 1:47.92. At the end of the day’s competition, the Greek quartet of Apostolos Christou, Nicole Pavlopoulou, Anna Ntountounaki and Stergios Bilas won silver in the mixed 4x100m medley relay, clocking 3:47.89. In the men’s 200m breaststroke, Savvas Thomoglou finished sixth in 2:12.66, while Marios Zafeiropoulos placed eighth in 2:18.09. Eleni Kontogeorgou also finished eighth in the women’s 200m breaststroke in 2:32.83, while Vasilis Kakoulakis took eighth place in the men’s 800m freestyle in 8:05.46. Eleni Antoniadou and Iason Routoulas were eliminated in the heats. Antoniadou finished 11th in the women’s 50m backstroke in 30.05, while Routoulas was 11th in the men’s 200m freestyle in 1:51.03.
