SANTA CLARA — Deion Jones, a 31-year-old linebacker, is coming to the 49ers in a trade from the New Orleans Saints, a league source confirmed Sunday night. Running back Zamir White goes to the Saints in return, pending physical exams of both players. The 49ers will be Jones’ sixth team in as many years as they prepare for Thursday night’s preseason finale at the Las Vegas Raiders. The linebacker corps has been impacted by hamstring injuries to Nick Martin and Luke Gifford, while Garrett Wallow did not appear in team drills Sunday. Starters Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw have been held out of preseason action, as is expected Thursday night. Jones was a rookie on the 2016 Atlanta Falcons’ Super Bowl team that included assistant coaches Kyle Shanahan and Raheem Morris, who are now the 49ers’ head coach and defensive coordinator, respectively. After six seasons with the Falcons, Jones bounced to the 2022 Cleveland Browns, 2023 Carolina Panthers and the 2024-25 Tampa Bay Bucs. He’s started 91 of 128 games played, and he made the Pro Bowl in 2017. Jones played in the Saints’ two games this preseason. White signed earlier this month with the 49ers as injuries ravaged their running back corps, which has since welcomed back Christian McCaffrey, Kaelon Black and Jordan James. In Thursday night’s win at the Los Angeles Chargers, White had a team-high 12 carries for 29 yards. Other running backs on the 49ers’ roster are Sincere McCormick and Khalil Herbert; Isaac Guerendo is on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
