A very sombre Chris Chester spoke to the press this evening and was visibly distraught regarding the current situation at Castleford Tigers. With boss Ryan Carr absent from tonight’s game due to “personal reasons”, Chester was the one to front up to the media, but was unable to provide any real clarity over the situation, labelling it “above him”. Asked if there was a timeline in which the Carr situation could be resolved, he replied: “We, and everybody, needs some clarity… There needs to be some kind of resolution, and fingers crossed that happens sooner rather than later. “…I’ve just got to make sure that these guys are ready next Friday night. The coaching staff have taken the rest of the week, and the rest of the coaching staff will take the sessions next week. I’ll just be the guy that fronts up to the media. “We know we’ve got to be better. We know next week [Hull FC away] is a big game for us. We’ve just got to be the best version of ourselves each week.” Commenting on what was another very poor performance, as the side lost 44-0 to Hull KR, Chester said: “I thought they did well that first 40 minutes. “We were unlucky not to get that try just before half-time. I’m just really disappointed with the second half. That’s been us for the last 20-odd weeks. “We showed in parts that we can play some good stuff, but again just a little bit of adversity and the bounce of the ball goes against us, and we crumble.” Asked why over the last few weeks the side have collapsed in the second-half, he replied: I don’t know. Are we fit enough? I’m not too sure. You’d probably argue that maybe we’re not. “Are we resilient? Well, the second half, the last 40 minutes says we’re not. I though in patches, that first 30-40 minutes, I thought we defended our try line okay. “It’s been a tough few days, it’s been a tough week, but the boys need to be commended with the way that they’ve acted in and around the club.” Chris Chester comments on fan reactions after Hull KR humiliation With fans in clear support of Ryan Carr, and very vocal in their discontent of the playing group, the chants from the Tigers faithful were a very clear message as to where their loyalties lie. Their chants were targeted at both players and the side as a whole, but Chester believes that the comments towards individual players crossed a line, and were unhelpful towards the current situation. Asked how the fan frustration and anger affect the players, he said: “It obviously doesn’t help. “There’s one guy out there that got booed for his first carry, and continually got booed. We don’t want to hear that. That does nothing for anybody’s confidence. “I’m disappointed with that, but listen, they are voicing their opinions on us as a club and as individuals, that’s just where we’re at at the minute.” Chester believes that once some sort of clarity over Carr appears, then both the club and fans can begin to bridge that gap of being connected once again. “Once we get some clarity, we can all come together,” stressed the Director of Rugby. “The fans pay their hard-earned money every single week – they’re entitled to their opinions, but we’re entitled to our opinions. We have to be better. We have to do better. At the moment, we’re not playing well enough.”
