Missed opportunities, with a proclivity for penalties influencing the equation, were the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ nemesis in Sunday’s 30-16 CFL loss to the B.C. Lions. “We’re shooting ourselves in the foot,” quarterback Trevor Harris said from Vancouver after the Roughriders (6-4) suffered their second consecutive defeat. Saskatchewan is second in the West Division, behind the Edmonton Elks (8-3). B.C. won its fourth consecutive game and moved into a third-place tie with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (also 5-5). The Roughriders had a lot more than the standings on their mind after Sunday’s game. “Too many errors,” linebacker Josh Woods lamented, “and too many missed assignments.” Tack on too many turnovers — four — including three in scoring territory. It was that kind of night for the Green and White … which brings us back to the missed opportunities: • On second-and-three from the Lions’ 27-yard line, Harris was intercepted near the goal line. • A 49-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Quali Conley was called back when Saskatchewan was penalized for an illegal block. That was one of seven infractions against the Roughriders, who were penalized 72 yards. • Harris found Johnny Johnson III for a 36-yard gain late in the second quarter. However, he lost a fumble on the Lions’ 29-yard line. • Early in the third quarter, the Roughriders’ Nick Wiebe scooped up a fumbled punt return and ran 21 yards for a TD. The score was negated by a no yards penalty. • A seven-yard run by Conley, who was tackled on the Lions’ nine-yard line, was called back due to holding. Harris was intercepted on the next play. The Lions then marched 85 yards on five plays for a touchdown. “We all took turns,” Harris said. The game started uneventfully enough, with the teams trading two field goals apiece. The Lions snapped a 6-6 tie with a 23-yard second-quarter touchdown pass from Nathan Rourke to Jevon Cottoy. Sean Whyte’s convert gave B.C. a 13-6 lead and completed the first-half scoring. B.C. went ahead 20-6 when Whyte converted a four-yard TD pass from Rourke to Keon Hatcher Sr., who scored at 6:32 of the third quarter. Zander Horvath followed with a one-yard TD run — his league-leading 12th major of the season — late in the third quarter. Whyte’s extra point made it 27-6. Saskatchewan answered with a five-play, 73-yard march that began after Jaxon Ford intercepted Rourke on the Roughriders’ four-yard line and returned the pick 33 yards. The visitors concluded the possession with a 32-yard TD pass from Harris to Dhel Duncan-Busby, who scored at 2:50 of the fourth quarter. Hale’s convert reduced the Lions’ lead to 14 points. Whyte and Hale then traded fourth-quarter field goals. Hale’s 25-yarder at 11:22 made it 30-16 and ultimately concluded the scoring. TREVOR’S TALLY Harris has thrown at least one TD pass in each of the Roughriders’ first 10 games. In franchise history, that streak is matched only by Kent Austin, who threw for a score in the first 13 games of the 1992 season. On Sunday, Harris was 28-for-42 for 356 yards. He needs 440 yards to tie Doug Flutie for 10th on the CFL’s All-Time list. Flutie, a six-time winner of the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award, threw for 41,355 yards over eight seasons (1990-97). As well, Harris moved into 12th All-Time in passing attempts (4,705), leapfrogging Kent Austin (4,700). Harris needs 38 completions to tie Ron Lancaster (3,384) for eighth in league history. With 961 completions as a Roughrider, Harris is 39 shy of becoming the fifth player to reach 1,000 in Green and White. Lancaster leads the list at 3,186, followed by Darian Durant (2,226), Austin (1,964) and Frank Tripucka (1,011). JOHNSON x 4 Offensive lineman Daniel Johnson gained 17 yards on his first CFL reception. It was the first catch by a Roughriders offensive lineman since Logan Ferland gained four yards against the visiting Ottawa REDBLACKS on Aug. 21, 2021. Daniel is the fourth player named Johnson to catch a pass for the Roughriders this season, joining Johnny, KeeSean and Jalen. EXTRA POINTS • Hale made all three of his field-goal attempts, from 47, 25 and 24 yards. He has now connected on nine consecutive three-pointers, including four from 40-plus yards (52, 48, 47, 41). Overall, he is now above 80 per cent for the season — 80.8%, to be precise (21-for-26). • Ford, playing in his 42nd CFL game, registered his first career interception. The pick came in his 13th career start and one day shy of his 26th birthday. His grandfather, Alan Ford, had four interceptions as a Roughrider — all in 1970. Alan Ford’s first career interception was against Edmonton on July 31, 1970 at Taylor Field. • Jameer Thurman, Mike Rose and Desmond Evans each registered a sack for Saskatchewan. James Vaughters added a tackle for a loss. Both of Evans’ CFL sacks have been against B.C. • Duncan-Busby, who had four catches for a team-high 85 yards, set a career high with his third TD catch of the season. He scored two TDs last year. • Rourke became the first player to throw for 355 yards against the Roughriders. Saskatchewan had allowed 356 (twice) and 354 (twice), but never 355 — until Sunday. • The Roughriders are to return to action on Saturday against the Toronto Argonauts. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m., at Mosaic Stadium.
