Police have made a series of arrests as undercover and high-visibility patrols continue in Huddersfield town centre. Officers from the Huddersfield Proactive Town Centre Team have been carrying out extra patrols during August as part of a summer drive to tackle shoplifting and anti-social behaviour. Plain-clothes officers have been patrolling shops and shopping areas looking out for retail crime. Police said recent arrests included a man detained on Tuesday on suspicion of stealing electrical goods and a 30-year-old woman arrested on August 18 on suspicion of stealing sportswear. Officers have also stepped up visible patrols and held crime prevention and community events in the town centre. They included a bike-marking session aimed at helping protect cycles from theft, while youngsters were given the chance to dress in mini police uniforms and become junior PCs. The August activity follows a four-week operation in July which saw officers in Huddersfield and Dewsbury make 70 arrests across the two town centres. Extra patrols are due to continue for the rest of August, including over the Bank Holiday weekend. Sgt George Rawlinson, of Kirklees Police, said: “Protecting businesses and those who use the town centre from crime is our key purpose as a team and the feedback and support we’ve received for the continued extra patrols and events has been really positive. “We want people to feel safer and businesses to know we are there to protect them and take action against those involved in retail crime. Our plain-clothes patrols are continuing to achieve results with regular arrests being made. “Reports of anti-social behaviour in the town centre also reduced during our patrols and events such as the bike marking, demonstrating the impact the extra high-visibility work is having at deterring offending. “We will be continuing these initiatives right up to and through the August Bank Holiday weekend to try and help those using the town have a safer end to their summer.” He added: “We continue to urge people to come forward and report offending as if we know there is a problem, we can start to put resources in place to address it. “If you have information about criminal or anti-social activity in either town, then please get in touch to assist us in putting resources where they need to be.” Information can be reported to West Yorkshire Police on 101 or via its website.
