Just about one year after its launch, ESPN is raising the price of its direct-to-consumer app. The price of ESPN Unlimited, the all-encompassing tier of the network’s app that includes access to live linear television feeds across the ESPN family of networks, will increase from $29.99 to $31.99 per month beginning September 17, according to the company’s support page. The news was first noted by Jon Lewis in Sports Media Watch. Annual subscriptions will also increase. The full-year plan of ESPN Unlimited will now cost $319.99, up $20 from its launch price of $299.99 last August. ESPN Select, the rebranded version of ESPN+ that does not include the flagship ESPN channels, will also see its price increase from $12.99 to $13.99 per month, with the annual subscription also being bumped up by $10. Lewis reports that those subscribing to ESPN Unlimited through the Disney+ and Hulu bundle will not see a price increase. That bundle will remain priced at $36 per month. According to a recent report by Sara Fischer in Axios, about four in five ESPN Unlimited subscribers are subscribed to that bundle. It is unclear whether ESPN’s pricing change will impact its other bundle deals with Fox One or NFL+ Premium. Currently, users can bundle ESPN Unlimited and Fox One for $39.99 per month, or ESPN Unlimited and NFL+ Premium for the same price. ESPN’s decision to raise the price of its direct-to-consumer offering falls in line with the steady price increases of other streaming offerings. Most recently, Peacock bumped its monthly price up for the fourth time in four years, with the streamer’s base plan now running $12.99 per month. Those who access ESPN through a cable, satellite, or virtual pay-TV bundle likely receive ESPN Unlimited at no additional cost. The network formally rolled out authentication to two of the largest pay-TV distributors in the country, Comcast and YouTube TV, earlier this year. But for those outside the bundle, ESPN Unlimited will simply be the latest in a long line of streamers to raise prices.
