Helsinki, Aug. 23 (SANA) Six Nordic football associations said Sunday they had lost confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino and called for major reforms to the organisation’s governance and decision-making. The football associations of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Faroe Islands issued a joint statement supporting calls by UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF for Infantino to resign. They also backed demands for an independent external investigation into the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which sought to sell a stake in commercial rights to competitions including the World Cup to private-equity investors. Infantino withdrew the plan following widespread opposition. The Nordic associations demanded binding guarantees that FIFA’s governance and competitions would not be opened to private ownership. They also called for a comprehensive, independent review of FIFA’s governance framework, focusing on institutional independence, checks and balances, transparency and accountability. Denmark’s football association said Friday that it would seek a credible alternative to Infantino in next year’s presidential election. The FIFA president is seeking another term that would keep him in office until 2031. Infantino was in the Dominican Republic during the weekend for meetings with Caribbean Football Union officials, despite a request from CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani that he avoid attending a regional youth tournament. FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Nordic statement.
