Sam Burgess was a very happy head coach after his side’s 34-24 win over Huddersfield Giants with Warrington Wolves having successfully navigated their jam-packed schedule. Warrington recorded their fourth win in just 15 days, dating back to the 42-4 win over Bradford on August 8th, with York, Hull KR and now Huddersfield beaten in the games since, with the Wolves now sat just two points behind the top two in Super League. Despite their lowly league position, Huddersfield were a clear banana skin for Warrington given the fact the Giants had won their last four consecutive matches and after opening the scoring, it would have been easier for the Wolves to falter. Instead, they hit back hard with three quickfire tries that earned them a deserved 22-4 lead at half-time and despite conceding four second-half tries, Warrington were never in true danger of defeat. On the Wolves’ status as contenders, Burgess responded: “We’re just chipping away, we’re doing our job. We’ll give it our best shot, I know that.” With top two Leeds and Wigan facing off in round 26, one of those sides will drop points, barring a first draw of the season. A defeat for either of those sides would give Wire a shot at making the top two should they win out, hence the important of Warrington sticking to their own task. He said: “I’m very proud, it was a very tough game, a lot of ball in play. “I thought Huddersfield were very good. They made us work very hard today and parts of us look a little bit tired, which is understandable, but I’m very proud of the way the team dug in, and we got two important points today.” The fact that the Giants scored four second half tries was raised as a possible point of concern, though Burgess was quick to dismiss it, stating: “I’m not worried about that yet. We can tidy that up as we go, but I’m a very happy coach today.” Instead, he was eager to praise wing duo Albert Hopoate and Matty Ashton who went for 181 and 151 run metres respectively, with the latter also scoring a try. “They’ve been very consistent,” Burgess asserted, adding: “You’ve got to remember Matty’s returned from an ACL and so is Hoppa so we always knew by the back end of the year we’d start getting into some sort of form and continuity. “They’ve done a bit great. Hoppa has been a wonderful pick-up, just a great boy to have around, and obviously Ashton, he never stops competing.” Another man who stood out on the back of his injury return was George Williams, who led Warrington with a whopping 223 run metres as well as a try, leading Burgess to joke: “He’s pretty good, isn’t he? “I don’t know what more I can say.
