Franco Colapinto committed two yellow flag infringements during the Dutch Grand Prix and was given penalty points on his licence for each. Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad were also penalised for failing to obey F1’s yellow flag rules.Colapinto’s first penalty was for overtaking Yuki Tsunoda as they passed double waved yellow flags on the first lap of the race. The flags were shown in response to Max Verstappen’s crash at the final corner, which littered the track with debris, as well as Gabriel Bortoleto’s 360-degree spin at the same corner. “Car 43 [Colapinto] was behind car 22 [Tsunoda] entering turn 14 and overtook car 22 in the double yellow flag sector before the [finishing] line at the end of lap one,” the stewards noted. “Normally such infringement requires a 10 second stop[-and-]go penalty, but the stewards acknowledge the complications caused by the significant amount of debris on track at this point and take this into account as mitigating circumstances.” The stewards issued the same decision regarding Arvid Lindblad who overtook Pierre Gasly at the same time. Both Colapinto and Lindblad received drive-through penalties and two penalty points on their licences. Colapinto was already gaining on Tsunoda as they rounded the final corner when Verstappen crashed ahead of them. He continued to pass the Racing Bulls as the crash unfolded ahead of them. Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and The Alpine driver criticised the stewards’ decision, calling it a “very harsh penalty” which “Colapinto: compromised the whole of our race”. “It’s quite tricky, I think, to manage those situations when there is a car and pieces of car everywhere flying around and you have to make a decision,” he explained. “It was clearly much more dangerous to slam on the brakes in the middle of the straight and on the water and on the banking and not doing what I’ve done. “I guess the rules are written [this way] but it should be much more flexible and give a little bit more, not just consistency, but a bit of flexibility in different situations that you can clearly see that this shouldn’t be penalised exactly what the rules say. But in the end of the day we still lead an infringement.” Colapinto received another penalty point, and a 10-second time penalty, for failing to slow sufficiently for yellow flags later in the race when Esteban Ocon retired. The stewards noted he “passed a single yellow flag without discernibly reducing speed although also receiving a visible warning on the dash.” “As the infringement was not considered dangerous or egregious, a penalty on the lower end of the available scale is imposed,” they added. They also found Liam Lawson guilty of the same infraction and issued the same penalty. The decisions leave Colapinto on a total of four penalty points, Lawson on three and Lindblad on two.
